190 games played / Tournament is finished

Tester comments: Denis Mendoza

This time, the 20 participants were given an opportunity to play a stiff single round robin tournament. Gaia, Queen, Dragon, Muse, and my old favorite, Nejmet were the top finishers. Gaia still maintained its stand as the best engine of the League. Queen, Dragon and Muse increased their standings while Nejmet will probably dropped slightly in the rankings as it came on 5th place. It’s a well balanced performance for black and white pieces. E4 and D4 opening lines were the favorites (as expected).

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

This is a tournament between the top free engines (excluding the biggest guns Rybka 1.0 beta, Toga II 1.2.1a and Spike 1.2 Turin) . As expected Naum 2.0 won the tournament followed by Fruit 2.1 .Scorpio 1.91 finished clearly ahead of Glaurung 1.2.1 . I will next test The "avalanche" setting (by CCRL) for Glaurung in the same tournament.

Tournament start: 2007.02.20, 16:47:05
Latest update: 2007.02.22, 05:19:38

Tester comments: Denis Mendoza

This League is the most balanced and unpredictable as there is no regular domination between participants. It’s a very close ending as Amyan took a half-point lead against veteran (and 2nd place) Zappa. Because of the new updates of Booot, Terra (now Alaric) and Twisted Logic, competition went neck-and-neck. The older warriors like Amyan and Pepito still managed to give the newcomers a decent battle. It’s also interesting to note a 53% performance for black against 47% for white. Endgame supremacy is the key for most of these games which ended on long routes.

Tester comments: Denis P. Mendoza

Pharaon even in the past proved its supremacy in the league and showed them again who’s boss. It took solo lead with an impressive 16 pts. followed by demoted Golden League member, SlowchessBitz with 14.5 points. Another solid contender, Aristarch, followed closely in 3rd place with 14 points. The Goliath engine seemed to be well-placed in this league as it took solo 4th place with 11 points. The limited 5-move opening lines from the book exemplify how well each engine will handle chosen lines. The results were pretty good as both white and black shared almost the same percentage of wins, but slightly avoiding ECO-E opening lines.

No surprises but still a "wow" performance by Spike 1.2 Turin .
Hermann 1.9, Chispa 4.03 and Aice 0.99.2 are relegated to the second division .

Tester comments: Denis P. Mendoza

To give more work to the engines, the opening book lines were limited to 5-moves. This will show more accuracy on each engines play from start to finish.

As usual, Rybka took the top spot with 13.5 points but was marked by two remarkable losses to our darkhorse, List 512. TogaII still was relentless taking solo 2nd place. Naum  made some impressive performance mostly on long routes taking 3rd place with 10.5 points. From the new ranking list, Spike and GambitFruit dropped from the top 5 engines. The new addition Movei seems to be way below this league in last place, but let’s see how it performs in the next tournaments to come.

There’s only one peculiar observation. A great percentage of the games were won by white pieces with 46.7%. Black wins and draws were tied at 26.7%.

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

After Scorpio had taken care of the strongest free winboard only engines in an earlier tournament it was now time for it to try and cross the final frontier : commercial The King 3.33 which has remained the strongest winboard only engine for quite some time. Although I did consider Scorpio 1.9 as slight favourite I did not expect it to win with the ease it finally did - a convincing 56.5-43.5 win for Scorpio 1.9 . Although some "The King" personalties may be stronger than the default personality but

 1. There is no consensus on the strongest one

 2. IMO the scoreline is fairly convincing ( which is not same as saying that the winner would remain same in a 500 game match also :) ) .

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

Two surprises . Wildcat 7 won the tournamrnt ahead of favourites Spike 1.2 and Naum 2.0 . Also Scorpio which regularly finished third in winboard tournaments behind Spike and Naum ended up in the bottom half with the new versio 1.84 and in fact avoided relegation only on the basis of superior tiebreak score. needless to say it does not mean, or even indicate that the new version is weaker . In fact in a winboard engine only tournament Scorpio 1.84 won commandingly ahead of Wildcat 7.Pharaon 3.51 continues to underperform and was again relegated to second division.

Tester comments: Denis P. Mendoza

Alichess 4.06 by Anton Lindenmair (Germany) proved its supremacy in this tournament garnering 7.5 points ahead of 2nd and 3rd placer BBChess 1.01 and Anechka 0.08 both with 7.0 ponts.

The next ranks were shared respectively by Adam 3.0, Gibbon 2.13d and Monarch 1.7, each having 6.5 points. The results were well distributed among the players on half-point differences.

On the average, we could assume that half of the league is about ± 50 ELO points in range.

Of the top 5 engines, only Gibbon, Alichess and Anechka stood their ground. BBChess 1.01 was a truly better upgrade than previous (v0.99).
Madeleine 0.2 could only salvage 8th place with 6 points (not bad!) and was replaced by Adam 3.0 on the Magic 5 list.

Our guest engine Cheops 1.1UCI, a Linux based experimental AI chess engine by Tristan Miller (compiled for Windows for UCI support by Michael Yee),
succumbed to last place with a winless record. At least it played a smooth game of chess and following the protocol rules by the book.

Another interesting observation is the high percentage of white wins of 60% (blsck wins = 27%, draws = 13%)
and an even usage of opening lines from ECO A to ECO D of about 22 % to 25%. (with ECO E usage of only 7%). I
n the past leagues, using the Noomen Test Suite, engines usually avoid the ECO A lines.

BIG OPEN

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

This Open was a long tournament :( (640 games!!! )

The winner was Rybka 14/16

Fritz 9 was second (I think Fritz is very good for fast time control).Toga completed the Podium with 11.5/16.Naum and The King did a good tournament. Arasan was a surprising 6th !!! Delfi 5.0 was the first 100% winboard engine  with 10/16... Like I began the tournament end december , I used the old crafty, the old Movei and even the old Scorpio , now all these strong engine were updated ... A funny thing is that I didn t see that I put 2 times Aice in this tournament :D ( 0.99.2 and 0.98)

In a 16 rounds open everything could happen . Gambit Fruit (a Top 5 UCI engine) finished only 26 th ... Jonny didn t play at his real level in this tournament.

Next Big tournament will be on a Quad CPU.

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

In a very tight 1-2-3 finish Naum 2.0 FRC won ahead of Glaurung 1.2.1 and Spike 1.2 .In fact in the original tournament in which Movei00_8_383 had played , Spike had won the tournament but then I replayed Movei's games with Movei00_8_397 which changed the tournament winner .By thwe way the new Movei version gained full 3 points over the previous version which had scored 13/36 .

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

I got the idea of this tournament after new Scorpio 1.84 seemed to underperform in a tournament (Winboard premier division) which was surprisingly won by Wildcat 7. Although I was convinced that this was most likely due to the stastical vagaries of small tournaments this gave me the opportunity to run a tournament I wanted to run for some time now- a tournament between best free winboard only engines . Although Wildcat 7 did take the lead for some time in the middle of the tournament in the end it was really no contest . The winner and still the best free winboard only engine- Scorpio 1.84.
Gajendra
P.S.- In fact currently the only commercial Winboard only engine that I know of is The King.Scorpio 1.84 versus The King 3.33 will be very interesting and , at least in my opinion, very very close .

Tester comments : Denis Mendoza

Victories were well-distributed among the topnotch players, but this time Deep Patzer snatched first place with 8.0 points. Nejmet showed them that it is still a consistent contender in this category with 7.0 points. Crafty took 3rd place (also with 7.0 points) followed by 4th placer Terra with 6.5 points. From the top five of the latest rating list only, Nejmet and Terra maintained their standings. A lot of Deep Patzer’s wins were made using the ECO D opening lines, which I noticed to be its main preference. It’s also good to see few draws in the tournament (about 18%). Crafty could have took the top spot if it had won its 4 drawn games.

Tester comments : Daniel Charles :

This time Sheebar.ctg won, this book is from Aung Thura ( 525 Mo!!!)  very impressive performance 27.5/40 !!!

2 nd my small book engine.ctg (18 mo :D ), maybe again a lucky 2nd place for the second times :D , I expected my computer.ctg perform better than engine.ctg.... :(

This time Takker Books didn t win but show strong performance with the 3rd and 4th place . All William Fuller books' are very good.

5th my computer.ctg ... it perform below my expectation (however, this books is very young 2 weeks .... and It needs to be more tuned for the next time )

6th The turk.ctg from Pr Vidanovic , this one is a very strong and respected book

7th  Paradigm.ctg from Dr Wael Deeb , this time paradigm.ctg did a lot better than expected , it show some good opening and was the only book that won against the sheebar.ctg book !!!

8th Fritz 9 book is a very famous and strong book, good for both side

9th Perfect 11 from Sedat Candaz , his book is from GM over 2650 elo, very good to test eng vs eng

10 th Gen 18 from Norm Pollock , this is a solid and good book for medium and long games

11 th  perfect12.ctg didn t do a good tournament , It was strange that the book perform below perfect11.ctg ??  I think it was just bad luck and the book should be better .
