This time Sheebar.ctg won, this book is from Aung Thura ( 525 Mo!!!)  very impressive performance 27.5/40 !!!

2 nd my small book engine.ctg (18 mo :D ), maybe again a lucky 2nd place for the second times :D , I expected my computer.ctg perform better than engine.ctg.... :(

This time Takker Books didn t win but show strong performance with the 3rd and 4th place . All William Fuller books' are very good.

5th my computer.ctg ... it perform below my expectation (however, this books is very young 2 weeks .... and It needs to be more tuned for the next time )

6th The turk.ctg from Pr Vidanovic , this one is a very strong and respected book

7th  Paradigm.ctg from Dr Wael Deeb , this time paradigm.ctg did a lot better than expected , it show some good opening and was the only book that won against the sheebar.ctg book !!!

8th Fritz 9 book is a very famous and strong book, good for both side

9th Perfect 11 from Sedat Candaz , his book is from GM over 2650 elo, very good to test eng vs eng

10 th Gen 18 from Norm Pollock , this is a solid and good book for medium and long games

11 th  perfect12.ctg didn t do a good tournament , It was strange that the book perform below perfect11.ctg ??  I think it was just bad luck and the book should be better .

In this tournament there are 2 new UCI engines(Pupsi ,Rival 1.14.2) +3 UCI just updated (Freechess 2.16, Feuirstein 4.5b1, Firefly 2.15 )

Pupsi won  this tournament. This is very good for a new UCI engine.

Adam Tie for the 1st place

3rd Smash , It was a good tournament for Smash. I think that Smash on a smp computer should be better

Smash and Firefly did a good tournament . The new Feuirstein beta did a tournament below the level of the old one .

Rival 1.14.2 UCI improve from the last open

Tester comments : Denis Mendoza

Zappa proved again that it’s still the best in his league capturing 1st place with 13.0 pts. (with surprising losses to Snitch and Amyan). Yace played a better game this time snatching 2nd place with 11.5 points followed by Pepito and Deep Frenzee respectively on half point increments. These three warriors maintained their status as main contenders of the league. 5th to 10th places were only separated by a 1.5-pt margin. Snitch took last place but credits to his double wins with 5th placer Aice. Snitch also had an 8-move loss on time (braindead?) – a rare phenomena experienced by some engines. But overall, the engines performance level improved this time because of the smaller gap between the top and last place warriors. Zappa will definitely be the top choice for the Silver League.

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

For the Final for this mini Open for December , time was 5mn+5s (10 mn), I add Movei 397 UCI and Pro Deo (Wb)

Rybka 1.0 is really the King of free UCI engine and simply king of free chess engine.Rybka was one more time outstanding with 16.5pts /18 !!!! Congratulation to Rybka and his author Vasik Rajlich

Toga came second with 13.5/18 , It was expected like Toga is simply the only free chess engine with rybka 1.0 to have a rating over 2800 elo .

Spike 1.2 completed the top 3 podium .Spike was the only one who beat Rybka 1.0 . Unfortunately Spike lost vs Toga & a surprising Ruffian.

4 chess engines shared the 4th place .If GB Fruit and his old brother Fruit 2.1 used to be among the top 6 free UCI engines , It was really a surprise to see Ruffian and especially Aristarch so high.

It is usual to see Glaurung and Naum in the top 10, SOS did a very good tournament, even better than expectation.

Pro Deo is a very good wb chess engine , 11th is a good performance if we consider that it was a very strong free engine open.

Zappa with time control 5+5 is a lot better than 4+2. Pharaon didn't show in this tournament that it belongs to the top 12 free UCI engine.

Movei 397 didn't do a good tournament (only shared the 20 th place), I think his real level should be with the top 15 free UCI engine.

Boot 4.12 played vs a very strong field and it was difficult for Boot.

Tester comments : Denis Mendoza

This time Rybka dominated with an impressive 13 pts, followed by the three Fruit engines (Fruit 2.1, TogaII, and GambitFruit respectivel). Though Glaurung just lurks near the shadows of the Fruit engines with 9.0 pts, same is true with the likes of Ruffian and Spike Turin. Glaurung, Ruffian and SlowBlitz showed some promising moves to improve their ranks, but the worst scenario came into the hands of Naum 2.0 which finished last together with List. At least Naum  could do is win a 35-move (A55-Old Indian Defence) with our 1st placer Rybka. Statistically, The Harry Schnapp 7-move opening lines seems to favor Rybka and the Fruit engines, not with the likes of the newly released Naum 2.0. Better luck next time!

Tester comments : Denis Mendoza

My initial bets for the tournament would be Patzer, Dragon, Leila and Nejmet fighting for the first four places based on previous tests, but It was a different endgame. It was a total landslide for The French engine, Dragon 4.6 by Bruno Lucas which took first place with 15 pts. with two losses followed by Diablo 051 in solo 2nd place with 12.5 pts. and 4 losses. Arion, Hermann and Terra gained 11.5 pts. Patzer and Leila both didn’t do well joining the last 5 finishers. We hope authors will release their new engines in UCI-mode like Alaric (previously Terra)

Zappa 1.1 and Yace will move to the next round with 12.5/15 and 11.5/15

It is not really a surprise to see Zappa win this open. Zappa 1.1 at long time control is among the top 10-15 best free UCI engines.

Yace was one the top 5 best free engine 3-4 years ago. Maybe it needs an update to come back to the top 10 .

At the bottom I was just surprise that Leila had only 1 draw and 14 losses !!! A level below his real standart .

Aice and Chispa will move to the next level with 11.5/15.

Lime & Black Bishop performed very well against a lot stronger opponents than the previous tourney.

I expected Queen, Muse, Monarch would play better . Especially Queen and Muse, both played below their rating ...

Gibbon had a very bad times in this Open ...

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

I ran a tournament for 20 top free winboard engines . There is inevitably some subjectivity in selecting engines for such a tournament but I hope I have not made a major bloomer although I should have found a place for Petir 3.99d ( and perhaps also for Anmon 5.6 ). There were no major surprises except for somewhat below par show by Pharaon 3.51. The medal placings were entirely as expected . New updates of WildCat and Pro Deo performed very creditably . Noomen suite with 40/4 time control on Pentium 4 ( 2.4 GHz ). I plan to add 10 more engines to the list and divide the 30 engines in 3 divisions of 10 engines each. Perhaps given enough time I would be able to generate enough games for at least an rudimentary rating list .

Regards ,

Gajendra .

It took me a long trial period to fix some incompatibilities of the engines with Arena 1.99 beta3 GUI. Alas! Zappa made it this time capturing 1st place with a magnificent 14.5 pts. Pepito 1.59 came in second with 11.5 pts (having the same five double wins as Zappa). Deep Frenzee and Yace are neck and neck for 3rd and 4th place. Let’s give credit to Deep Frenzee for its wins against the first two finishers. While the rest of the pack showed average performance, Amyan 1.597 seems to lose track of its moves losing to known weaker opponents and unexpectedly finishing with only 5 pts into last place. Another remarkable attraction is the 2 short wins by Twisted Logic against Alfil and Aice with only 19 moves – a must see for beginners.

The Jekyle and Hyde personalities of these engines brought up an advantage to Zappa and a disaster to Amyan. As we always say in basketball, “ the ball is round!” and every game is different and dynamic.

Lastly, I believe some dual-mode (UCI/WB) engines are more comfortable running in WB and vice-versa. Martin Blume of Arena has to update his latest version to fix some bugs.

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

In this tournament there are 2 new UCI engines(Black bishop,Rival) +3 UCI just updated (Freechess 2.16, Feuirstein 4.5b1, Firefly 2.15 )

Black Bishop won easily this tournament. however It lost against the second (Lime 62).

Smash and Firefly did a good tournament . The new Feuirstein beta did a tournament below the level of the old one .

Rival 1.06 UCI show a good level of play for his first tournament. Chris Moreton is working very hard on his UCI engine and It will not be surprising if Rival improve quickly

FreeChess seems to have the same level , maybe it improved but not that much .

Simontacchi 1.8 need a new update ...

NSV had his second draws after 100 games , there is still hope even for an engine average 400 elo pts to 700 elo pts weaker than the best engines in this tournament .However , Nicolas Veselin have to add some chess knowledge to NSV chess to win a game.

Tester comments : Denis P.Mendoza:

Surprisingly, Aristarch 4.50 truly shined in this tournament and took 1st place with 12.5 pts, 2 pts ahead of sole nemesis and 2nd placer Pharaon 3.5.1. “Nemesis” because it lost twice to Pharaon on E-opening lines (E01 & E12). Ktulu 4.2 (previous leader) wasn’t lucky this time, yet remained in contention with 10.0 pts. together with SOS and Colossus. Tao 5.6 dropped its standings with only 9.0 pts. Arasan 9.5 made some slight improvements at 7th place (with 7 pts.) leaving the cellar to Ufim 8.02. We usually expect positive results from updated engines, but it is not the case with Ufim. Better luck next time for Niyas Khasanov. Finalizing the event, Aristarch’s impressive performance gives it a chance to catch up with its cousin List 5.12 in the near future. We’ll have to see if Pharaon and Ktulu change the wind of Aristarch. .

first round(1/16):

lot of surprise :

  • Tao 5.6 won vs Pharaon 3.51
  • Thinker 4.7 draw Ruffian (then I eliminated Ruffian :) )
  • Jonny & List 5.12 (draw 5-5 )  list was out
  • Wildcat 7 beat easily Aristarch!!!

2nd round:

I was a little bit astonished that Wildcat 7 was so strong , it almost eliminate TOGA II 1.2 . Fruit 2.1 had some difficulties to beat Glaurung 5.5-4.5. Naum 2.0 punished Pro deo 1.2 (9-1 !!!!)

I expected Scorpio to beat CM 10th ... I was wrong , CM 10th qualify easily... The biggest surprise of this tournament was Jonny 2.83 who beat Fritz 9 after a big fight (6-4)

3rd round (1/4)

Toga II 1.2 won vs his Twin brother Fruit 2.1 and qualify to the semi final. GB fruit had an easy match against Jonny. No problem for Spike vs Naum 2.0 .

Rybka sweep CM 10th (10-0 !!!!!!)

final four (1/2)

Tester comments : Denis P.Mendoza:

TogaII 121 surprisingly won first place garnering 14.0 pts with a lone loss from Glaurung 121 on a French Tarrasch Opening (C08). Rybka 1.0 beta came in second with 12.0 pts and 3 losses, all with the courtesy of the Fruit engine brothers (Fruitt,Toga. GambitFruit). All losses used the B-opening ECO-lines – BI7. B33 and B87.

GambitFruit and Spike still remained in the top 5 list, while Naum 2.0 replaced Fruit 2.1 on the top 5 standings in 4th place. Though Glaurung made a win against the 1st placer Toga, its performance wasn’t good enough for a 7th place finish. SlowChessBlitz, Ruffian, and List remained the top 3 cell dwellers.

A promising chess engine like Slow Chess Blitz by Jonathan Kreuser may need to be updated soon as promising newcomers are reborn.

Every round is different so we may need more tests to have the best results. Maybe modifying the opening book to a 5-move limit could make the tournament more interesting next time. Another option would be making tournaments for the A, B, C, D, and E opening lines respectively. This would be a fun event to look forward to.

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

Thanks to Uri for Movei 386 UCI . This is just a small Gauntlets (100 games).

After 100 games It is too early to draw some conclusion . However, Movei 386  was doing very well vs strong UCI engines  .It is not so far from Aristarch 4.50 level (2600 elo) .

average 50% versus strong UCI engines

Movei scored very well vs Pepito, Ufim , Tao(80%!!!) and Yace

Movei lost badly vs Pharaon , Ktulu (only 25% :( )

It fought like a warrior vs Aristarch,Anmon,SOS and Colossus (40 to 45% )

Movei UCI belong to this strong silver league top 10 to 20 best free UCI when it will be release (actually we don t know 100% for sure what is the best Movei and  we will help Uri test his beta ).

It is always interesting for us to test a very strong beta and new UCI engine .

Thanks to Uri who spend time to add the UCI protocol to his very strong chess engine and to send us Movei 386 to test

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

The winner with a large margin was Rybka 1.0 beta 16.5/18 and no loss .

Fruit and his 2 twin brothers (Toga and GB Fruit ) scored the same total of points 12.5pts and shared 2nd place.

The top 10 engines were from the golden league . Spike didn t do well on 5 mn games, probably a lot better with a long time control , His loss vs pharaon and dragon cost him to be out of the 5 engines in this tournament

10 th to 20 th are were only separated by 2 pts !!!

The only strange thing is Zappa who lost some games on time or lost badly with fast time control... Of course Zappa 1.1 is a lot stronger at long time control .

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

No problem here for GB Fruit .

Pro Deo 1.2 is a very strong Wb engine. I tested a intermediate version of Movei 383 UCI , this is not the best Movei , Gauntlet about the new Movei 386 UCI is coming soon probably a top 15  UCI engines .

Booot 4.12 did a good tournament. Alfil show a strong improvement.

This tournament was difficult for Firefly because It played against engines 100 to 500 elo stronger than him .However in his league/division Firefly perform well

Tester comments :

Graham Banks :  Rybka 2.2 went through the tournament unbeaten!

Junior 10 deservedly took out 2nd spot.

Fruit 2.2.1 always does well against top class opposition and its 3rd placing was therefore no real surprise.

Shredder 10 and Spike 1.2 Turin were disappointing, but this was a top field..

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

Unlike the last time this time I have decided to divide the FRC engines in two divisions . The idea behind this is to let the engines of comparable strength play against each other . From the engines who took top ten places in the first tournament Gothmog_frc was excluded because

1. Glaurung from the same author is already playing in the premier division and 2. Gothmog is no longer being developed so I thought it was only fair to give another engine the chance to play in the premier division .

This meant that Movei 00_8_383 got in. My next tournament will be for the second division and top two finishers will replace the bottom two finishers of this tournament in the next premier division tournament . The placings were according to expectations ;almost too much so . Ufim scored slightly more than expected, Movei slightly less . I have no explanation for this except that perhaps this was just due to statistical noise or because 40/4 time control on a fast computer is not same as 40/4 on a slow computer like mine . Comments , questions and suggestions are welcome as always .

Regards ,

Gajendra .

This is just a small test .However, Pro Deo was doing good .It came 3rd just behind Glaurung and Naum .

Scorpio is one of the free winboard engine (probably soon the best free winboard engine)

Crafty was better than I expected . Jonny didn't do a good tournament, but this verson is an old Jonny .The lastest Jonny is private .

I tested the new Romichess and It was very promising managed some very good draws versus strong engine like Naum, Scorpio, Aristarch

I took the 14 French UCI engines and I made a Swiss tournament . each UCI engine met 1 time the others. The french tourney didn t deliver real surprise , the 3 strongest was on the final 3.

Fruit 2.1 won easily the French Tournament for UCI engine  12.5/13 !!!! (only Dragon draw Fruit)

Pharaon was second with 11.5/13 and Anmon the French Champion 06 came third with 10.5/13

French UCI engines are very strong with 6 UCI engines among the top 30 free UCI .

NSVChess 0.14 had his first 1/2 point.

Tester comments : Gajendra Singh:

1. I tried to include all free FRC engines . Firefly was missing because the latest version does not support FRC and I could not get the earlier version . If anybody can suggest any other free FRC engine I will be grateful .

2. Only Ufim, Hermann , Big Lion and Taktix played as UCI engines . The rest have problem with castling because incomplete implementation by Arena of the uci protocol in FRC.

3. Glaurung , Homer , Ayito, Tornado and Hamsters used polyglot ( hence the PG in the engine name ). The rest played as winboard engines .

4. I plan to run more Chess 960 tournaments so any suggestions to improve it or make it more interesting are most welcome .

 Regards ,

Gajendra .

Tester comments : I did some preliminary test and Takker III scored 75 to 80% vs  medium strength opening book (paradigm,Hs,Mix18,I-base,perfect9....). That s why I took only the strongest book against Takker III beta. I took perfect 12 because I was surprised by his strength in the preliminary test, probably Sedat Candaz best book ever that I test for Fritz GUI

William fuller (Takker) book is very strong, this beta book won the book tournament. This book is very impressive , scored 72.5 % perfect 12, 75% vs the Turk, 60 % vs Fritz9book. Really the strongest book I ever tested for online games & blitz .

Engine book, I didn t expected that the book come second ,Maybe it was lucky (because i m not an opening book author and won't be). this a very small book only 12 Mo (100 % engines and probably 90% Rybka and average 2750 elo (online players) :D). Thanks to William & Dagh (their 2 teams were finalist in the last Pal/Css) for their advices and some strong online engine room players for their .pgn. This book will be release probably end December, beginning January. I will try to have a 20 Mo opening book & tuned the book a little bit more.

Perfect 12  is a strong book, it only lose the match vs Takker & draw strong book like Fritz 9 and The Turk and of beat the engine book . If you didn t have this book, I recommend you to download this  good & strong opening book. Probably the winner if Takker Book didn t play this tourney

Fritz 9 is probably one of the best commercial opening book. It scored well with white. We will see soon if the Fritz 10 opening book is better .

The Turk book is a strong book. It was in the top 3 in my last 2 tournaments. It beat one more time Fritz 9 book and draw perfect 12, unfortunately it lost too much points vs Takker & engine book. I was a little bit disappointed because Pr Vidanovic book is one of my favorite opening book.

Tester comments :  Daniel Charles :

Abrok & pepito shared the 1st place .

This is a tourney with very closed competitor, from Abrok (1st) to Dragon (6th) only 1 pts.

Arasan & twisted Logic were doing good in their new league (division)  .I played with the old Booot , I think that the new would do a little better . ( My fault )
